Searching is not Reading

A concept at the heart of Hypertext is Browsing - that is a concept of readability, not simply accessing information. It is interesting to note how far back to the origins of Hypertext theory this idea goes.

Vannevar Bush did not focus on something like "search". Rather, he thought of "consulting" or "selecting" a topic as in a library, "tracing it down from subclass to subclass".

Vannevar Bush hoped importantly that "selection by association, rather than indexing, may yet be mechanized". This can be seen as description of what we now may call Folksonomy Tagging.

Modern Trends

Apple's design focus, from iOS 7 onwards on "cinematic interfaces - check for proper term here), and the concept of Deference in the user experience, is a refocussing on the idea of readability over Ease of Use.

The possibility to construct a Readable Interface in a consumer device, owes much to the wide spread popularity of computer games, and of a pervasive knowledge of basic computer interface design by the public at large. This in turn allows the designer to create interfaces that put the content foremost, and to be "deferential" with regard to the tools and functionality.

Smallest Federated Wiki is an example of Deferential Design. It is not immediately obvious that double clicking on a paragraph will result in the ability to edit the text for instance.

In "Idea Mining" we ask students to extract generalizable ideas, patterns, or data from research they complete, media they watch, or experiments they perform.

To forage is not the same as search, or browse. It is not viewing recent activity. It is rather an art which combines many of these in a way which is unique to the individual - it is a way to Hunt For Pages.
